Troubleshooting Sprayer Tools

Effective weed management relies on functioning tools. Often, issues can be avoided with regular maintenance, which we see as a key part of tool use. Sometimes, especially when engines are involved, a professional level of expertise is needed to fix broken tools. However, some tool malfunctions may be easily addressed while in the field, allowing for the completion of that day's task, between routine maintenance, or before a larger issue has been diagnosed.

Here we present common issues and troubleshooting steps for four types of spray tools–Hand sprayers, Backpack sprayers, Electric Backpack sprayers and Power sprayers. The information provided is not comprehensive, it reflects the experiences of practitioners who use these tools to conduct natural resources management on Oʻahu, shared during the 2025 Sprayer Troubleshooting Workshop at Kualoa Ranch. Jump to the end to learn more about the workshop and programs involved in developing these resources.

In addition to addressing common issues with these tools, we provide tool/parts list for your field crews to have on hand for field site troubleshooting, as well as lists of vendors/suppliers to keep your programs well stocked and able to make these in-house fixes.

About the Workshop

The resources shared here were developed as reference materials for the 2025 Sprayer Troubleshooting Workshop. This workshop was organized by the Priority Oʻahu Native Ecosystem Working Group (Priority ONE, P-1) and hosted by Kualoa Ranch in Kaʻaʻawa, Oʻahu.

Each sprayer tool was a station during the workshop, with each station lead by staff from the Army Natural Resources Program, Oʻahu, Oʻahu DOFAW-NEPM, Protect and Preserve Hawaiʻi, and Kualoa Ranch. These same programs, in addition to the Waiʻanae Mountains Watershed Partnership, developed the troubleshooting tables, field kits, and vendor lists prior to the workshop to have as reference material for participants. Notetakers documented additional issues, and tips, that were shared during the workshop. The information here reflects that exchange as much as possible. Participants joined us from ten Oʻahu-based natural resource management programs/projects, and over 40 participants shared their experiences.

We are interested in expanding this resource to reflect the experiences of programs and practitioners based on Kauaʻi, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi Island. Let us know if you are interested in a similar workshop with your community of work or have island-specific vendor details that we can include here. You can reach us at EcosystemsExtensionHI @ gmail.com or lportner @ hawaii.edu. Be sure to join our listserv (below) to stay connected for future events and resources.
